I’m Eric J. Hébert, WB2EHG, a Technician-class amateur radio operator based in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY.

My involvement in amateur radio began as a teenager in the 1970s. I later let my license lapse after joining the U.S. Coast Guard, where I served 13 years on active duty and attained the rank of Quartermaster Second Class. I went on to serve another 17 years as a Coast Guard Auxiliary officer, including service as a National Division Chief. After 30 years in uniform, I finally hung it up—but the Coast Guard’s commitment to readiness and public service remains a large part of who I am.

I returned to amateur radio in November 2024. I was initially assigned the callsign KE2EMK, then successfully reclaimed my original call: WB2EHG.

My primary passion is emergency communications. I’m continually developing my skills in DMR, APRS, repeaters, satellite communications, and practical handheld-radio operation so I can be a dependable operator who is ready to serve when called upon. I’m a member of NYC ARES, EventHams, and the ARRL.

My primary radio is a BridgeCom SystemsMaverick HT, and I use a HamSpot 5 for DMR. You may hear me on BrandMeister around NY-METRO, North America, or Worldwide. I can also turn up on EchoLink or AllStarLink through the QSO One app—because apparently talking to the entire planet from an apartment in Brooklyn is a perfectly reasonable hobby.

When I’m not playing radio, I’m a husband, the father of a grown daughter, a devout cat person, and a tree-hugging Pagan. I try to be funny, but often just end up smelling that way.

I log my contacts with QRZ.com and World Radio League. I also try to keep Logbook of The World updated—but, well, you know how that goes. I use DigiQSL for my QSL cards.

Whether we meet across a local repeater or halfway around the world, I hope to hear you on the air.

It is not the class of license the Amateur holds
but the class of the Amateur that holds the license
