Common Q Codes Every New Ham Should Know
A Plain-English Guide to the Radio Shorthand You Will Actually Hear
The first time you listen to an amateur-radio conversation, it can sound as though everyone else has been issued a secret dictionary. Operators talk about QRM, QSL a contact, give their QTH, and announce that they are going QRT. None of it is meant to keep newcomers out. Q codes are simply old radio shorthand that remains useful today.
Q codes began as a way to pass common questions and answers quickly in telegraphy. They saved time, crossed language barriers, and reduced the amount of information that had to be sent under difficult conditions. Amateur radio inherited many of them, especially on CW using Morse Code, and a smaller group became part of everyday ham vocabulary.
You do not need to memorize a huge list before getting on the air. Learn the handful you are likely to hear, understand what they mean, and use them only when they make communication clearer.
How Q Codes Work
A Q code is a three-letter group beginning with Q. In its formal form, adding a question mark turns it into a question. QRL? asks, “Is this frequency in use?” While QRL states that the frequency is in use.
On voice, the punctuation is not transmitted, so meaning comes from the words around the code and the way it is spoken. Many operators also use Q codes as nouns. A QSO becomes a contact, QRM becomes interference, and a QSL becomes a confirmation.
Radio language changes through use. Some common voice habits are looser than the original definitions. Where that matters, this guide explains both the formal meaning and the way you are likely to hear the code used by hams.
Interference and Signal Problems
QRL — The Frequency Is Busy
QRL? asks whether a frequency is already in use. You may hear it before someone begins calling on an apparently quiet HF or simplex frequency. On voice, “Is this frequency in use?” is usually even clearer.
On the air: “QRL?” or “Is this frequency in use?”
QRM — Interference From Another Signal
QRM means that another station, transmission, or human-made signal is interfering with reception. It is different from atmospheric noise.
On the air: “I’m getting some QRM from a nearby station.”
QRN — Static or Natural Noise
QRN means interference from static or natural electrical noise. Thunderstorms are a familiar source, especially on the lower HF bands.
On the air: “The storm is producing heavy QRN tonight.”
QSB — Signal Fading
QSB describes a signal whose strength rises and falls. Fading is common on HF as propagation changes along the signal path.
On the air: “Your signal is readable, but it has some QSB.”
Power and Sending Speed
QRO — Increase Power
QRO formally means to increase transmitter power. Hams also use it to describe operating with higher power.
On the air: “I may have to go QRO to make it through the noise.”
QRP — Reduce Power or Operate at Low Power
QRP formally means to reduce transmitter power. In amateur radio it also describes low-power operating as a style of its own.
On the air: “I’m operating QRP from the park today.”
QRS — Send More Slowly
QRS asks an operator to slow the sending speed. You will encounter it most often on CW, where slowing down can turn an unreadable signal into a comfortable conversation.
On the air: “QRS, please” means “Please send more slowly.”
Ready, Waiting, or Finished
QRV — Ready to Communicate
QRV means ready. It may refer to being ready for a contact, a net, an event, a particular band, or a planned operating session.
On the air: “I’ll be QRV for tonight’s net.”
QRX — Wait or Call Again Later
The formal Q signal asks when a station will call again. In ordinary amateur use, QRX is also commonly used to mean “wait,” “stand by,” or “I will be back shortly.” Context tells you which meaning is intended.
On the air: “QRX one minute while I adjust the radio.”
QRT — Stop Transmitting
QRT means to stop sending or shut down the station. Hams often say they are “going QRT” when they are finished operating.
On the air: “I’m going QRT for the night.”
Making and Confirming Contacts
QRZ — Who Is Calling Me?
QRZ? means “Who is calling me?” It is useful when one or more stations call and you cannot identify the callsign clearly.
On the air: “QRZ? Please give your callsign again.”
QSO — A Radio Contact or Conversation
The formal meaning concerns communication with another station. In everyday amateur radio, a QSO is simply a two-way contact or conversation.
On the air: “I had a very nice DMR QSO with a station in Alabama.”
QSL — Receipt Acknowledged or Contact Confirmed
QSL means that information has been received and understood. It also became the word used for confirming a contact, whether with a printed QSL card or an online confirmation.
On the air: “QSL, I copied your location as Brooklyn.”
QTH — Station Location
QTH means location. Depending on the conversation, it may refer to a home station, a portable operating site, or the place from which someone is transmitting.
On the air: “My QTH is Brooklyn, New York.”
Changing Frequency and Relaying Traffic
QSY — Change Frequency
QSY means to move to another frequency. Operators may use it to leave a calling frequency, avoid interference, or continue a conversation elsewhere.
On the air: “Let’s QSY to 146.520 MHz”
QSX — Listening on Another Frequency
QSX means listening for a station on a specified frequency. You are most likely to hear it during split-frequency HF operation, when a station transmits on one frequency and listens on another.
On the air: “The DX station is transmitting here and is QSX five kilohertz up.”
QSP — Relay a Message
QSP means to relay information to another station. It is useful when two stations cannot hear each other but a third station can hear both.
On the air: “Can you QSP my signal report to that station?”
QTC — Messages or Traffic to Send
QTC refers to messages or formal traffic waiting to be sent. You are most likely to encounter it in traffic handling, organized nets, or contest exchanges rather than casual conversation.
On the air: “I have one QTC for the net.”
Q Codes on Voice
Q codes are most efficient on CW, where three characters replace an entire sentence. On voice, plain language is often easier to understand. “I have interference” communicates just as well as “I have QRM,” especially when speaking with a new operator.
A few codes—QRM, QSL, QSO, QSY, QTH, and QRT among them—are so familiar that they sound natural in amateur conversation. Use them when they help, but do not pack a sentence with shorthand merely to sound experienced. Good operating is measured by whether the other person understands you.
During emergency communications, follow the procedures of the net and the served agency. Plain language is normally the safest choice because it reduces ambiguity and allows radio operators and non-radio personnel to understand the same message.
A Note About QRZ and CQ
QRZ and CQ are sometimes confused, but they do different jobs.
QRZ? means “Who is calling me?” Use it when you know someone called but you did not copy the station’s identity.
CQ means “I am calling any station that can hear me.” Use it when you are seeking a contact.
QRZ.com borrowed its name from the familiar Q signal, but the website name does not change the code’s on-air meaning.
