My Virtual Elmer: Learning Ham Radio with ChatGPT
In amateur radio, an “Elmer” is an experienced operator who helps someone else learn the hobby. An Elmer answers questions, explains unfamiliar concepts, shares practical experience, and sometimes keeps a new operator from making an expensive—or embarrassing—mistake.
Lately, I have been using ChatGPT as a kind of virtual Elmer.
I don’t mean that it replaces experienced radio amateurs. It has never repaired a radio at the workbench, chased down interference in my neighborhood, or struggled to put up an antenna in bad weather. It doesn’t possess experience in the same way a human operator does. But it is always available, remarkably patient, and willing to explore a question from several different directions.
That makes it a useful companion as I build my amateur-radio capabilities.
I can ask it to explain a technical idea in plain language, then ask follow-up questions without worrying that I am taking up someone’s time. If the first explanation doesn’t click, I can ask for an analogy, an example, or a more detailed version. We can talk through antennas, operating procedures, station planning, digital modes, troubleshooting, or almost any other corner of the hobby.
The conversational part matters. A reference book gives me information, but a conversation helps me find the question behind my question.
ChatGPT has also become useful for collecting what I learn. Amateur radio produces an amazing amount of scattered information: radio settings, programming notes, checklists, cable details, antenna measurements, lessons learned, emergency procedures, and solutions to problems I will otherwise forget six months from now.
We have started talking about turning those pieces into my own Operator’s Handbook.
The handbook could become a living record of how my particular station works. It might include startup and shutdown procedures, equipment settings, programming instructions, operating checklists, troubleshooting notes, maintenance records, and reminders drawn from experience. Instead of repeatedly rediscovering the same answer, I can capture it in a form that will still make sense later.
There is an important limitation: an AI can be confidently wrong.
For anything involving electrical safety, RF exposure, equipment limits, licensing rules, band privileges, or emergency communications, its answer should be checked against authoritative sources and experienced operators. The FCC rules, equipment manuals, trusted technical references, and the amateur-radio community remain essential. A virtual Elmer can help me understand and organize information, but I am still the control operator. The responsibility for what happens at my station remains mine.
Used with that understanding, AI doesn’t weaken the Elmer tradition. I think it can help prepare me to participate in it more fully. It helps me learn the vocabulary, organize my questions, document my station, and recognize the places where I need genuine hands-on guidance.
Perhaps someday my Operator’s Handbook—and the lessons gathered while creating it—will help me become a better Elmer for someone else.
I recently asked other operators whether they use ChatGPT or similar tools in their own ham-radio journeys. I’m curious not only whether they use AI, but how. Is it a tutor, reference assistant, troubleshooting partner, documentation helper, project planner, or something entirely different?
For me, it is becoming all of those things.
It is my virtual Elmer: available whenever curiosity strikes, useful when treated thoughtfully, and one more tool helping me grow as an amateur-radio operator.
And the final word is mine. ChatGPT advises, I decide. I make the final choices on what actual happens in the real world. I test everything it comes up with before I implement any changes.
