QSO One: The One Stop option for Digital Voice Communications!

How one operator’s frustration with aging software became a modern gateway to AllStarLink—and a growing amateur radio community.

QSO One brings AllStarLink, EchoLink, DMR, M17, and YSF together in a modern application—but its most interesting feature may be the amateur radio community helping to build it.

Amateur radio has always been about connection. The radio, hotspot, computer, or app is simply the tool that gets us there. What matters is the person on the other end and the community that grows around those conversations. That is what caught my attention about QSO One.

I first encountered QSO One while it was still being actively tested and developed. On the surface, it offered something amateur radio has needed for a long time: a clean, modern way to reach several internet-connected radio networks from one application. But as I spent more time with it—and spoke with its creator, Frank KD8JKK—I realized that the more interesting story was not another new piece of ham radio software. It was the community beginning to form around it.

The idea for QSO One grew from a familiar kind of ham radio frustration. After being away from amateur radio for some time, Frank returned through EchoLink. The program worked, but it looked and felt like software from another era. Other operators told him that AllStarLink was where much of the activity had moved, so he asked the most natural question: Where is the app?

The answers ranged from “There really isn’t one” to complicated explanations involving programs that were difficult to configure, limited to certain platforms, or no longer being actively developed. The alternative was often to build an AllStarLink node using a small computer and radio interface—or purchase dedicated hardware. Either route could require money, technical knowledge, and a fair amount of patience before making the first contact.

QSO One grew out of the belief that it should not have to be that difficult.

‍ ‍Today, QSO One brings AllStarLink, EchoLink, DMR through BrandMeister and TGIF, the open-source M17 network, and YSF into one unified interface. It runs on Windows and Android, with additional platforms planned. For operators who simply want to connect and start talking, it removes much of the hardware expense and technical setup that can make AllStarLink intimidating.

That convenience matters, but it is not what interests me most.‍ ‍

I have watched QSO One develop through the feedback of actual operators. Beta testers have reported problems, suggested improvements, tried new features, and helped uncover the odd edge cases that developers cannot always reproduce on their own equipment. Frank has remained present in that process, listening to users and continuing to refine the application. This is not software being created behind a closed door and handed to the amateur radio community as a finished product. The community is helping shape it.

That conversation extends beyond the application itself. QSO One has both a Discord server and a Facebook group where operators can ask questions, report what they are experiencing, suggest ideas, and help one another. Those spaces are becoming part support network, part development workshop, and part gathering place for hams interested in where internet-connected amateur radio may go next.

From my apartment in Brooklyn, I already have several ways to reach the amateur radio community. My BridgeCom Maverick and HamSpot 5 are at the center of my daily DMR operating, and they are not going anywhere. QSO One does not replace my radios or my hotspot. It gives me another doorway—particularly into AllStarLink, while also bringing several other networks together in one place.

There will always be debate over what “counts” as radio when the Internet becomes part of the path. I tend to look at it more practically. Repeaters have long been linked by telephone lines, microwave systems, and the Internet. DMR depends heavily on network infrastructure. EchoLink and AllStarLink allow licensed operators to reach real radio systems from places where putting up an antenna or reaching a local repeater may be difficult. The technology changes, but the purpose remains remarkably familiar: find another operator, key the microphone, and say hello.

QSO One is still evolving, and that is part of what makes it interesting to follow. New capabilities are being added, problems are being identified and corrected, and the community around it is helping determine what the application becomes. I do not see that merely as testing a new toy. I see it as participating in a collaboration.

Ultimately, QSO One’s most important feature may not appear anywhere on its feature list. It lowers a barrier. It gives another amateur operator a simpler way to get connected, join a conversation, discover a network, or return to a hobby they once left behind.

And once the connection is made, the technology has done its job.
